My Ride Through the Tsurugi Super Forest Road: Japan’s Hidden Off-Road Paradise
Japan, a country blessed with rich mountain landscapes, has long been known for its forestry traditions. Across the country, countless “rindō” (forest roads) were originally built to support forestry work. Today, many of these roads remain — quiet, scenic, and often unpaved — offering a completely different riding experience from the well-maintained national highways.
This time, I set out on a motorcycle tour to one of Japan’s most remarkable routes: the Tsurugi Super Forest Road in Tokushima Prefecture, Shikoku. Stretching 87.7 kilometers, it’s the longest forest road in Japan, and an absolute must-ride for anyone who loves adventure touring. In this post, I’d like to share what it’s like to ride through this legendary mountain route.

About the Tsurugi Super Forest Road
Hidden deep in the mountains of Shikoku, the Tsurugi Super Forest Road is Japan’s longest unpaved road open to the public, stretching over 80 kilometers through the breathtaking mountain ranges of Tokushima Prefecture.
This legendary route connects the towns of Kamikatsu and Naka, winding through remote forests, crystal-clear streams, and dramatic ridgelines near Mt. Tsurugi (1,955m)—one of western Japan’s highest peaks. For adventure motorcyclists, this is one of the most rewarding off-road rides in Japan.

The surface is mostly gravel, with sections of compact dirt and occasional rocky climbs, offering just the right balance of challenge and accessibility for dual-sport and adventure bikes. Along the way, you’ll encounter panoramic viewpoints, untouched cedar forests, and mountain shelters where riders often stop for a break and take in the silence of nature.

Because of heavy snow in winter, the Tsurugi Super Forest Road is usually open from May to November, depending on weather conditions. Early summer and autumn are the best seasons to visit—the forests are lush and green, or painted in vivid fall colors.
If you want to experience true adventure riding in Japan, the Tsurugi Super Forest Road is an unforgettable route that captures the wild and spiritual beauty of Shikoku’s mountains.
