What to Wear for Motorcycle Touring in Japan – Spring Guide
Motorcycle Touring in Japan | Seasonal Riding Gear Tips
Japan has four distinct seasons, and preparing the right riding gear for each time of year will make your motorcycle tour much more enjoyable.
Temperature differences can be extreme: winter can drop below freezing, while midsummer temperatures may exceed 35°C. From spring to early summer, humidity can be high, which increases physical fatigue.
Because Japan stretches from north to south, the climate varies greatly—Hokkaido in the north can be cool even when Kyushu in the south is hot. For this reason, it’s important to prepare your gear according to the regions you plan to tour.
Below is an overview of the gear I personally use when touring in Japan.
I hope these tips help make your ride more comfortable and enjoyable.

🌸 Spring (March–May)
March – Still cold, winter gear recommended
March is technically spring, but temperatures remain low, and many mountain routes are still closed due to snow.
Winter riding gear works well during this period. Because temperatures fluctuate widely, it’s best to adjust with different types of base layers.
Recommended gear:
- Winter riding jacket
- Winter gloves (heated gloves are also a great option)
- Thermal base layers
April – Best season for touring in many regions
By April, temperatures rise considerably in regions like Kanto, Kansai, and Kyushu, making it one of the best riding seasons.
However, mountain areas remain cool, so bring a jacket with a removable inner liner to adjust as conditions change.
Recommended gear:
- All-season jacket with removable liner
- Three-season gloves + optional glove liners
May – Peak touring season across Japan
By May, most routes in Tohoku finally open after winter closures.
Temperature variations become larger: mornings and evenings can be cold, while midday temperatures sometimes reach 25–30°C.
A jacket with good windproof performance and ventilation will help you stay comfortable.
Recommended gear:
- Ventilated all-season jacket
- Three-season gloves
- Lightweight base layers
