Off-Road Motorcycle Adventures in Japan

Essential Gear and Preparation for the Tsurugi Super Forest Road Ride

Off-Road Motorcycle Adventures in Japan

In early November, I set out on a motorcycle adventure along the Tsurugi Super Forest Road in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan. This 87.7 km route winds through the mountains of Shikoku, ranging in elevation from 500 to 1,000 meters.
Because of the altitude, the temperatures are noticeably cooler than in the lowlands, especially in the early morning and late afternoon when the sun hides behind the ridges. On the day of my ride, the weather was perfectly clear, with a high of around 19°C and a low of about 10°C.

🧢 My Riding Gear

Clothing Tips for Riding in Japan’s Mountains

Spring and autumn in Japan can have large temperature swings between day and night, so layering and adjustability are key.
I also carried a windproof inner vest for extra warmth during the colder hours.
Choose a riding jacket with ventilation zippers that can be opened or closed depending on the temperature.
Because the mountain air is chilly and the wind can be strong at higher elevations, wind protection is especially important.

The forest roads of Japan are mostly unpaved and can be slippery, so protective gear is essential.
Make sure to wear off-road boots that cover your shins, as well as knee and elbow guards.
You’ll also encounter muddy sections and shallow water crossings, so expect your gear to get dirty—embrace it as part of the adventure.

Food, Water, and Fuel

Along the Tsurugi Super Forest Road, there are two small rest areas where light snacks are available, but there are no vending machines.
Be sure to bring your own drinking water (at least 1 liter) and snacks such as energy bars, bread, or rice balls.

There are also no gas stations along the forest road, so make sure to fill up your tank before entering the route. Running out of fuel in the mountains can mean a very long walk!

Summary

The Tsurugi Super Forest Road is one of Japan’s most rewarding off-road routes, offering breathtaking views and pure riding enjoyment.
With the right preparation and gear, you can safely experience the beauty of Japan’s mountain landscapes on two wheels.
