1. International Driving Permit (IDP)
Riders from countries that signed the 1949 Geneva Convention (including the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, and most of Europe) can drive in Japan with:
- A valid motorcycle license from your home country
- An International Driving Permit (IDP) based on the 1949 Geneva Convention
Both the IDP and your original license must be carried together.Valid for up to 1 year from the date of your entry into Japan.
2. Countries with Special Agreements
Riders from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco, and Taiwan do not use an IDP. Instead, you need:
- Your valid home country license
An official Japanese translation (issued by JAF – Japan Automobile Federation – or your embassy/consulate)
3. Duration & Restrictions
Foreign licenses (IDP or translation system) are valid for 12 months from the date you enter Japan.
Staying longer?
You will need to apply for a Japanese driver’s license.
Make sure your home license allows you to ride the size of motorcycle you plan to rent (250cc, 400cc, or larger).
4. Practical Tips for Riders
- Rental companies will check carefully – especially for big bikes (over 400cc).
- Japan drives on the left side of the road – take extra care at intersections.
- Helmet use is mandatory at all times.
- Highway riding requires confidence in merging and using toll gates.
If you’re not used to Japan’s roads, consider joining a guided motorcycle tour.
✅ In summary:
- Most riders (US, UK, EU, etc.) → IDP (Geneva 1949) + home license
- Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco, Taiwan → Home license + Japanese translation
- Valid for 1 year after entering Japan
