Japan drives on the left side of the road.Pay special attention when turning right or entering intersections, as it’s opposite to most Western countries.

- Urban areas: usually 40–50 km/h
- Rural roads: usually 50–60 km/h
- Expressways / Highways: 80–100 km/h (some sections allow up to 120 km/h)

3. Highways & Tolls
Most expressways are toll roads.You’ll take a ticket at the entrance gate and pay when you exit.Many rental bikes come with an ETC card (Electronic Toll Collection) for faster, cashless payment.
4. Traffic Rules & Riding Etiquette
Helmet is mandatory for all riders and passengers.Headlights must be on at all times, even during the day.Lane splitting (riding between cars) is common but should be done carefully.Stopping at railway crossings is mandatory.
5. Alcohol & Safety
Zero tolerance for drinking and driving — even one drink can result in arrest.Police frequently check for impaired driving.
6. Road Conditions
Mountain and countryside roads are narrow and winding.Watch out for wild animals (deer, monkeys, boars) in rural areas.In winter, many roads in northern Japan and mountain passes may be closed due to snow/ice.
7. Parking
Illegal parking is strictly enforced, especially in cities.Use designated motorcycle parking areas (often near train stations, shopping centers, or tourist spots).
