Kagoshima offers one of Japan’s most iconic touring landscapes.
As you enter Kagoshima City, the dramatic sight of Sakurajima volcano rising above Kagoshima Bay (Kinko Bay) unfolds before you — a view cherished by the Japanese for centuries. Riding along the bay with Sakurajima constantly in view is considered one of the most scenic motorcycle routes in Japan.

Heading south from Kagoshima City, you will reach Chiran, a beautifully preserved former samurai town. Here, traditional streets remain intact, allowing visitors to step back in time to the Edo period. Chiran is also famous for its tea culture, where you can enjoy matcha desserts and freshly brewed green tea during a relaxing stop off the bike.

Crossing over to the Osumi Peninsula, the scenery becomes increasingly wild and natural. The route leading to Cape Sata, the southernmost point of mainland Japan, follows stunning coastlines and open roads. Along the way, riders are treated to views of Kaimon-dake, often called the “Mt. Fuji of Satsuma,” with its perfectly shaped volcanic silhouette rising across the sea.
One of the key tips for motorcycle touring in Kagoshima is making good use of ferries. Ferries connecting Kagoshima City, Sakurajima, and the Osumi Peninsula allow riders to move efficiently between regions while enjoying unique sea crossings as part of the journey.

Kagoshima is also rich in hot springs, thanks to its volcanic activity. From the Kirishima Onsen area in the north to the famous Ibusuki sand baths in the south, riders can enjoy a wide variety of onsen experiences after a rewarding day on the road.
With its mild climate, Kagoshima is an excellent destination for extended riding seasons. Motorcycle touring is enjoyable from March in spring through November and even into early December in autumn.
At Mototourist, we can design touring routes focused solely on Kagoshima, or create extended itineraries linking Kagoshima with Kumamoto and Miyazaki, allowing you to explore Kyushu at the best possible timing and pace.
