Autumn (September–November) – Riding Gear for Touring in Japan
September – Still warm in most regions
September in Japan often feels like an extension of summer. Until late September, mesh jackets and mesh gloves are still suitable, and the weather is generally more comfortable than the intense heat of August.

In Hokkaido, however, autumn arrives early. Morning and evening rides can feel chilly, so it’s helpful to bring a windproof jacket or a light thermal inner layer in addition to your mesh gear.
Recommended gear:
- Mesh jacket
- Windproof inner layer
- Mesh gloves
October – One of the best months for motorcycle touring
October is one of the very best seasons for motorcycle touring in Japan. Temperatures and humidity drop, making it ideal for long rides.
However, keep in mind that October has seen an increase in typhoon activity in recent years, which means more rainy days than in the past.
A waterproof three-season jacket is the best choice for this month.
In mountain or highland areas, temperatures drop significantly, so make sure to bring warm and windproof inner layers.
Days become shorter quickly, so it’s wise to plan your riding schedule with extra time to spare.
Recommended gear:
- Ventilated all-season jacket
- Three-season gloves
- Lightweight base layers
November – Colder weather and the start of winter conditions in the north
By November, Hokkaido and the Tohoku region may see early snowfall, so you’ll need to choose your routes carefully.
Although temperatures drop, November is still one of the most beautiful touring seasons thanks to Japan’s spectacular autumn foliage.

With warm gloves and a jacket with a removable thermal liner, you can enjoy comfortable rides throughout the month.
In mountain valleys, early morning road conditions may be icy, so pay close attention to your route and departure time.
November also brings many clear, sunny days and dramatic scenery — morning mist, cloud inversions, and vibrant fall colors — making it one of the most breathtaking months for motorcycle touring in Japan.
Recommended gear:
- All-season jacket with removable liner
- Three-season gloves + optional glove liners
