Japan has four distinct seasons, each with completely different climates depending on the month and region.
Preparing the right riding gear will make your motorcycle tour safer, more comfortable, and far more enjoyable.
Japan’s weather varies widely:
- Temperatures range from below freezing in winter to over 35°C in summer
- Humidity can be extremely high between spring and summer
- Japan is long north to south, so Hokkaido and Kyushu can have entirely different climates during the same month
Below is a practical, rider-focused guide based on my own touring experiences throughout Japan.
🌸 Spring (March–May)

March – Still cold, winter gear recommended
Many mountain roads remain closed due to snow.
Use winter gear and adjust comfort with different base layers.
April – Ideal touring season in most regions
Temperatures rise in Kanto, Kansai, and Kyushu.
However, mountain areas remain cool — a jacket with a removable liner is ideal.
May – Touring opens fully across Japan
Tohoku’s mountain passes finally open.
Because mornings and evenings are cold but midday can reach 25–30°C, choose a windproof jacket with good ventilation.
☀️ Summer (June–August)

June – Rainy season in parts of Japan
Kyushu and Shikoku are hot and humid; rain is frequent.
Use waterproof gear with ventilation.
July – Hot across most of Japan
Temperatures often exceed 30°C.
A mesh jacket works best, combined with a windproof layer for mountain areas.
August – Extremely hot in lowland regions
Touring is best in Hokkaido, Nagano, or Tohoku mountain areas.
Use a mesh jacket and ventilated boots, and take precautions against heatstroke.
🍁 Autumn (September–November)

September – Late summer conditions continue
Mesh gear is still suitable in most regions.
In Hokkaido, prepare windproof layers for chilly mornings and evenings.
October – One of Japan’s best touring months
Comfortable temperatures and low humidity.
However, typhoons and rain are common.
A waterproof three-season jacket works best.
November – Early winter in the north, autumn colors nationwide
Hokkaido and Tohoku may see snowfall.
With warm gloves and a jacket with a thermal liner, you can ride comfortably.
Early morning frost is possible in mountain areas — choose routes carefully.
November offers some of Japan’s most breathtaking scenery: fall foliage, morning mist, and cloud inversions.
